The Piscataway people lived in the Baltimore area when non-native explorers arrived in the early 1600s. The first permanent settlers arrived around 1659, and the Port of Baltimore was authorized in 1706. The Town of Baltimore wasn't established until 1729. Baltimore grew considerably as its port expanded and after the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad began operation in 1828. Though Baltimore suffered a great fire in 1904, it has rebounded and become a world-class city.
Today, more than 620,000 people live in Baltimore and more than 2.7 million people live in the greater metropolitan area. Baltimore is perhaps best known as the home of Johns Hopkins University, one of the most prestigious medical schools in the world. Every year, millions of tourists flock to Baltimore's Inner Harbor, which is home to such sights as the National Aquarium and the Baltimore Museum of Industry.
